On Monday, Jan 16th Oakland Tech interns celebrated MLK Day in the beautiful outdoors. Interns were a part of a big volunteer event hosted by Save the Bay, a wonderful organization who is working to protect, restore and celebrate the Bay.

Rachelle Cardona, Restoration Education and Community Engagement Specialist, educated and engaged the 65+ volunteer crew in a bit of restoration to kick off the day. This included pulling some invasive weeds along the shoreline that were having negative effects on the local natives.

The second half of the day was all about waste, and Earth Team’s very own Jenna Topper, engaged with the community about what citizen science is and how it can be used to create service learning projects that target litter issues at the source.

Our interns were the experts, and the community was invited to participate in this data collection by partnering up with an intern and shouting out types of litter as they were being picked up!

3,741 Pieces of Litter Collected !!!

Here is just a few things our interns had to say about the day:

“I really enjoyed actually putting my hands in and working with the other people. It was also really cool to see young people being active and trying to make a difference in the community. I wished that I had worn warmer clothes though because it was freezing. Overall, it was a pretty great experience!” -Jessica

“My favorite part of the day was getting to see so many younger kids who were enthusiastic about the environment, I thought it was really encouraging and inspiring.” -Lucy

“What I thought was really cool about today is the fact that a group of strangers can work together to achieve a goal and help each other out along the way” -Nicole

“My favorite part of today was seeing that people of all ages cared enough to come out on a day off to help us” -Lawrence

We received amazing feedback from the community, and were tremendously grateful for how supportive and intrigued the community was in our litter data collection work.

We look forward to continuing to engage with the community and share our app so that everyone, no matter where you are from or what you do, knows that they have all the tools they need to be a scientist and make a real impact in the world!

MLK said it best himself.

“The time is always right to do the right thing”
