This past week, interns welcomed their first Guest Speaker of the year, as well as, got some training on the 3-Bin system that they will be implementing at Oakland Tech in late Fall. Interns participated in a hands-on learning activity teaching them how to properly separate into a 3-Bin system, they were also given some time to discuss together the importance of; Source Reduction, Composting, Recycling, and Landfill and why this project needs to happen at Oakland Tech High!
Ingrid Severson, Oakland Outreach Coordinator for Waste Management of Northern California, gave a eye-opening perspective into the world of waste. Interns got the chance to learn about some of the programs WMNC is running to reduce waste in Oakland as well as the different challenges and strategies this organization is using to tackle waste related issues. It was a great presentation, but even better was the free composting bin and recycling bags students got to take home with them!
To finish of a day well spent, students sat down together to come up with their own personal goal related to waste. Check out a few below!
